provides training, support, and equipment to assist licensed
Colorado family child care homes, child care centers, and preschools in developing learning environments and curriculum’s that are more inclusive for all children, including those with delays and disabilities

Universal Design and Inclusion Kits are available for checkout by licensed child care programs in the state of
Colorado who have completed the Project Include interest form and the Introduction to Universal Design
training. The kits can be checked out for up to 6 weeks. The kits may be borrowed directly from Early
Childhood Council of the San Luis Valley (ECCSLV).
All items have a QR code that links to an instructional video detailing how to use the item. The kits are
designed to address one of the following topics:

  • Communication & Literacy Kit – This kit is designed to promote inclusion and participation of children with disabilities or delays affecting communication and early literacy development.
  • Vision & Hearing Kit – Designed to promote inclusion and participation of children who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, or hard of hearing either temporarily or permanently.
  • Fine & Gross Motor Kit – Designed to promote inclusion and participation of children with disabilities or delays affecting motor development.
  • Behavior & Cognition Kit – Designed to promote inclusion and participation of children with disabilities or delays affecting behavior and/or cognition
  • Infant Kit – This kit is designed to promote inclusion and participation of infants in child care settings, especially infants with disabilities, delays, or differences.

What is Early Head Start ?

Early Head Start programs provide family-centered services for low-income families with very young children, to promote the development of the children, and enable their caregivers to fulfill their roles and to move toward self-sufficiency.
Early Head Start programs provide similar services as preschool Head Start programs, but they are tailored for the unique needs of infants and toddlers. Early Head Start programs promote the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of infants and toddlers through safe and developmentally enriching care giving. This prepares these children for continued growth and development and eventual success in school and life.
Following the general Head Start model, Early Head Start programs support parents, both mothers and fathers, in their role as primary caregivers and teachers of their children. Programs assist families in meeting their own personal goals and achieving self-sufficiency across a wide variety of domains, such as housing stability, continued education, and financial security. Early Head Start programs also mobilize the local community to provide the resources and environment necessary to ensure a comprehensive, integrated array of services and support for children and families.

Who is the program for ?

Pregnant moms, infants, and toddlers through age three who live in the San Luis Valley.  Eligibility is based on income, Specific Public Assistance, and family need. Total household income must be within federal poverty guidelines.  We encourage all types of families to apply, especially families with children who have disabilities or other special needs and families who are learning English as a second language.

Parents are active participants in their child’s education from the very beginning! Early Childhood Council EHS will provide you with educational services, health services, nutrition education and assistance in finding other community resources your family may need! Call today! Space is limited!

Why did I choose to work in the Early Childhood field?

I chose to work in the field of Early Childhood because as a very young mother I didn’t know what to expect having a child of my own. Not knowing what to do or how to raise a child I wished I would have known programs like these were available. To me it was a big struggle not knowing what was next or if my child was on the right track. Now that I’m here helping families including young families it gives me the opportunity to share what I have learned throughout the years. As a home visitor not only do I bring what is best to my knowledge but also build relationships with our parents and children. The best part and why I love what I do is that it gives me the opportunity to not only work with children but to see both the child and the family grow together every day.
